Thank you to Carla and Trish for making new labels for the Compassion quilts.  More where quilted and home with our lovely ladies for binding and labels.  Thank you again to everyone for their hard work.

Welcome to Karen – Lister’s wife from England who came to stay after his accident, wrote us a lovely thank-you note and would like to move to Canada but Lister has other feelings about that right now.

Charity Quilts:

Kelly  is the contact for two Charity Opportunities :

South Calgary Health Campus needs neo-natal quilts – 30 x 24 inches – 100% cotton only.  Please do not use sprays like basting spray.  The quilts will be washed at the hospital. Can contain a small quilt guild label. Also flannel receiving blankets – the usual size
Meals on Wheels will accept most sizes of placemats – we have found that 13 x 17 fits on a tray and two sided is nice. Kelly will collect both and drop off when she has a bunch.

RECAP OF MARCH MEETING

Charity Quilts UPDATE:

More of your wonderful Compassion Quilts found new homes this month, one going to a Carla G’s Mother and to a young man who is now in hospital after an accident he was in on Highway 1.  Betty’s friend Courtney says Thank You for the quilt she received upon the passing of her mother.

Again we would like to thank our quilters Janet, Kelly and Trish for all their hard work on the quilting.  Thank you again to the binding ladies for all their work as well.  And finally, thank you to those who continue to bring quilt backs, binding and batting for the projects.

Next Instalment of  Charity Work – The Placemat:

Using our 9.5″ orphan blocks we will create a finished placemat quilt top measuring 13″x17″.  There will be only ONE exchange for this charity project.  If you have taken a block please complete the 13″x17″ quilt top and bring it back in April.  In April we will return it to the “owner” of the block who will add batting and backing and quilt it using a sandwich style so there is no binding.

People who are currently participating are: Pat S. Carla, Betty, Louise

Heritage Park Quilt Show May 24-25, 2014

The theme for this year’s guild table will be: Quilting Education and Something old/Something New.

If you are able to LOAN a modern quilt for the booth please let Mary know.

We are in need of volunteers at the table for the 9:30-1 slot and the 1-5 slot.  Please let Mary know if you are available.

Does anyone have a large piece of clear plastic to cover the table?  Unfortunately, ours went missing last year.  Please let Mary know.

Does anyone have small modern quilts or other small items to fill out the table display?  Perhaps some MUG RUGS?

We will also include a charity quilt in our display this year.

Basically – speak to Mary with questions.

More wonderful charity quilts were finished by Janet and Kelly and sent to the wonderful ladies who will be binding them.

Thank you also to Trish for making the lovely labels.   We were able to send another one to a good home thanks for the suggestion from Betty.

Next Instalment of  Charity Work: Be ready for MARCH (sorry about dropping the ball in Feb).

Idea #1:    If you wish to participate, you would contribute a rectangle block/panel of some sort.  Each round a border would be added all the way around – like a round robin.  These would be made into a quilt.

Idea #2:   Using an orphan block we would add to it until it became a placemat (13″x17″).

In MARCH bring your orphan panel or rectangle/block to guild and the next round will be decided.  Remember to leave a 1/4″ seam allowance around the block/panel.

Possible Charities:

A Note from Mary

* Please ensure that you have signed up for set up/clean up crew

* Please don’t forget to pay your membership fee

Clarification about SET UP/CLEAN UP

  • Please arrive at 8:45 a.m
  • Please make Coffee – Direction for making the coffee are on the side of the fridge and the access to the usable water is in the lower cupboard to the right of the sink (Don’t use the tap water, it won’t poison us, it just doesn’t taste very good.)
  • Please set up the tables for the sewing – The tables are located in the kitchen and behind the stair and under the stage at the front of the church (you can see the separation in the step where you can pull it out. You need 2 people for this little manouver as its a little awkward).
  • Please take down any tables or chairs where no one is sitting. – They should be returned to their original places at the conclusion of the day.   (4 tables in Kitchen and the rest under the stage.)
  • Please do the Dishes and Vacuum before you leave – Dishes should be washed and put away and the coffee emptied before the church is locked up as well as the general area vacuumed.
  • Please find a sub if you are unable to make that meeting

Please feel free to stay and sew in the afternoons.  We have the church until 4pm.  If the set up/take down crew start taking down before 4pm, please feel free to stay.  DON’T FEEL RUSHED.

Just ensure that:

  1. your table is put away
  2. you have vacuumed your area
  3. cleaned any dishes that you held on to and put them away
  4. ensure that someone will lock the church door
  5. close the gate once you leave

Charity Quilts – Our goal is to have the tops complete for the December meeting.

AMENDMENT to border dimensions (I apologize, I misunderstood the directions from last month).

Last Border: 5.5″ on sides, 7.5″ on top and bottom

Second Last Border: 3.5″ on sides, 5.5″ on top and bottom

  • Quilts should be roughly 51″ x 65″ with the last border on
  • Janet will be quilting them for us – YEAH JANET!
  • In December please help us finish them by either bringing BACKING or BATTING (61″x 75″)
  • Once back from Janet we will then bind them
  • If you worked on the last border of the quilts and have about 1/2 meter of fabric, please consider saving it for binding

Where Women Gather

Next WWG meeting is November 17 from 1-4pm.

December 14: Christmas Exchange and Potluck

Don’t forget to work on your Candle Mats for the December challenge.  We will begin with a show and tell, our exchange and potluck.

Set Up/Take Down Crew for December: Mary, Dianne M, Shannon, Karen R.

We were so fortunate that some of our members brought some show and tell items.

Carla BROUGHT SHOW AND TELL.  It took her 9 years to complete it.  She even dolled it up with SPARKLE spray. A NOTE: The Tulip Sparkle Spray is the best.  The Tattered Angel is not good – so avoid.  Carla also learned what a selfie is….

Linda brought this fab quilt she did for a friend’s birthday.

DEMO: English Paper Piecing

Thank you Trish for the brilliant demo on EPP.  We learned so much.

This is the technique by Mickey Depre

If you would like to see more photos from our guild meetings check them out here.

See you in December.
